In the world of diet culture, many of us have been told to go low carb or cut out carbs completely. It may have been to lose weight or to be healthier
If you've followed All Bodies for a while, you'll know that we love carbs and aren't usually ones to promote cutting out carbs.
So why is this? Why do other people say to cut out carbs and we or other Dietitians and Nutritionists say that they're good?
Well, carbs as a food group, contain more than just cakes, burgers, chips and chocolate.
Carbohydrates are whole grains too!
Wholegrains being oats, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, rye, wholemeal pasta and bread.
Removing wholegrains from our diet can actually do more harm than good. (note: there isn't really any good in removing them)
Wholegrains are amazing for our gut health as they are a source of fibre that normalises bowel movements and aids in bowel health, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
As well as having these health-protective benefits whole grains are rich in vitamins like B vitamins, antioxidants, trace minerals (iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium) and protein.
There's a fun fact for you: whole grains can be a great protein booster for your meals!
In other words, whole grains are essential for good, long-term health!
